To the Editor:

The review article on erythropoietin (EPO) in pre-dialysis patients was informative and useful [1] . In view of the high cost of treatment, non-responders to EPO have to be identified at the earliest. By following conventional methods, one may have to wait for a period of six to eight weeks to identify a non-responder. To overcome this problem, the reticulocyte maturation index is helpful, as the immature reticulocytes can be seen as early as four days after initiation of treatment in responders [2] . A rational approach to poor responders to EPO treatment has been described recently by MacDougall [3] . Also, Strachan, et al have discussed the usefulness of competitive binding disequilibrium radio-immunoassay to optimize EPO treatment, especially to identify poor subcutaneous absorption [4] .
