Hospital activities in organ donation program in Saudi Arabia

The total number of hospitals reported possible deceased donor (DD) cases during the year 2011 were 95 hospitals. These were divided into either large (>20 ICU beds), medium (10-20 ICU beds) or small (<10 ICU beds).

Large hospitals, (14), reported 173 cases (24% of the total).114 (66%) of these possible cases were fully documented and 30 consents for organ donation were obtained (26% of potential DD cases in this group).

In this group, 20 consents were obtained from King Saud Medical Complex (KSMC). KSMC is continued to be the largest source of consents in the Kingdom for the last six years. King Abdul-Aziz Medical City (NGH-Hospital) - Riyadh came next with five consents, followed by King Fahd Hospital - Jeddah with two consented cases in addition to one consent obtained from: Armed Forces Hospital - Riyadh (RKH), King Khalid University Hospital and Dallah Hospital -Riyadh.

Medium sized hospitals, (with ICU beds 10-20) contributed with 41% (290 cases) of the total reported cases. However, only 27 consents (19% of potential DD cases in this group) were obtained for organ donation.

The most active hospitals in this group were King Fahd Hospital - Hofuf, King Khalid Hospital -Al-kharj and Prince Salman Hospital - Riyadh with five consents for each, followed by King Fahd Specialist Hospital - Qassim with four cases. One case for consent was obtained from: Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, Dammam Medical Complex, Dr. Abanami Hospital - Riyadh, King Fahd University Hospital - Al-Khober, Al-Manea General Hospital - Al Khober, Saudi German Hospital - Riyadh, King Khalid Hospital - Hail and Assir Central Hospital.

Small sized hospitals (ICU beds less than 10) shared with 197 possible deceased cases (28% of the total) and 24 consents were obtained from them i.e. (23% of potential DD cases in this group).

Among this group, Al Iman General Hospital - Riyadh was the most active with five consented cases followed by Al-Manea General Hospital-Dammam with four consents. Al-Jubail General Hospital, Shagra General Hospital and Obeid Specialized contributed with two consents each. Moreover, one consent was obtained from each of the following: Al-Mowasat Hospital -Dammam, Buraida Central Hospital, Hera Hospital - Makkah, National Hospital - Riyadh, Dawadmi General Hospital, Al-Gedaani Hospital - Jeddah, King Faisal Hospital - Makkah, Al-Hammdi Hospital - Riyadh and Al-Khafji General Hospital.

Activities of the organ sharing program between the Kingdom and GCC countries showed that 12 consents cases were obtained under this program; distributed between Kuwait hospitals (11 cases) and Qatar Hospitals (one case).

The following table shows the distribution of possible, consented and actual deceased donors according to region:



Distribution of consent cases by region shows that 58 (62%) out of 93 consents were obtained from the Central region (44 from MOH hospitals, seven from Govt. Non-MOH hospitals and seven from private hospitals). The Eastern region came next with 16 (17%) consents; followed by the Western region with six (6%). The Southern region contributed with only one consent while no consent was obtained from the Northern region this year.
