The dialysis statistics prepared by the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) at the end of year 2014 showed a total of 15,782 dialysis patients, 14,366 of them are treated by Hemodialysis and the remaining 1,416 by peritoneal dialysis. The prevalence of end-stage renal failure treated by dialysis is estimated to be 513 cases/pmp, Total death was 1655 (10.5%), while the incidence of treated ESRD is estimated at 136 cases/PMP.

   Hemodialysis Top

There are 187 dialysis centers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia having 5,732 machines catering to 14,366 patients. The ministry of health offers the largest percentage of these facilities with contributions made by the NON-MOH government sector as well as the private sector. The age distribution of dialysis population showed that the majority of patients are in the age groups (26-65) years. About 7.8% of the dialysis patients are older than 75 years while only 1.5% of them are under 15 years.

Hepatitis B seems to be in good control (3.4%) while hepatitis C continues to be a major problem (15.5% positivity) among dialysis patients. Of the 14,366 patients on dialysis, about 20% are in the active waiting list for transplantation with another 20% being evaluated for possible inclusion in the waiting list. On the other hand mortality rate among HD patients was reported to be 11% (1533 patients). It is worth mentioning that 59% of the hemodialysis patients are hypertensive, while 44% are diabetics.

   Peritoneal Dialysis Top

The total number of patients treated by peritoneal dialysis had increased from 1,402 patients in 2013 to be 1,416 by the end of the year 2014. Age distribution of P.D patients showed that (90% of them are adults and 10% are children. At the same time, 490 new patients have been registered this year on peritoneal dialysis. Total death among PD patients was reported to be 8.6% (122 patients). 27% of PD patients are treated by the continuous ambulant peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), 70% by automated/continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (APD/CCPD), and only 3% are treated by intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD). 2.4% of patients on PD are found to be HBsAg+ve and 3.5% are HCV antibodies+ve.
