The dialysis statistics prepared by the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) at the end of year 2010 showed a total of 12,633 dialysis patients, 11,437 of them are treated by Hemodialysis and the remaining 1,196 by peritoneal dialysis. The prevalence of end-stage renal failure treated by dialysis is estimated to be 498 cases/pmp, Total death was 1569 (12.4%), while the incidence of treated ESRD is estimated at 133 cases/PMP.

 Hemodialysis

There are 177 dialysis centers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia having 4,481 machines catering to 11,437 patients. The ministry of health offers the largest percentage of these facilities with contributions made by the NON-MOH government sector as well as the private sector. The age distribution of dialysis population showed that the majority of patients are in the age group, 56 to 65 years. About 7% of the dialysis patients are older than 75 years while only 1.9% of them are less than 15 years.

Hepatitis B seems to be in good control (4.1%) while hepatitis C continues to be a major problem (24.5% positivity) among dialysis patients. Of the 11,437 patients on dialysis, about 22.3% are in the active waiting list for transplantation with another 20% being evaluated for possible inclusion in the waiting list. It is worth mentioning that 61.5% of the hemodialysis patients are hypertensive, while 42.6% are diabetes.

 Peritoneal Dialysis

The total number of patients treated by peritoneal dialysis had increased from 1,112 patients in 2009 to be 1196 by the end of the year 2010. (79% of patients are adults and 21% are children). At the same time, 520 new patients have been registered this year on peritoneal dialysis. Total death among P.D patients was reported to be 9.8% (117 patients). 30.3% of P.D patients are treated by the continuous ambulant peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), 59.3% by automated/continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (APD/CCPD), and 10.4% are treated by intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD). 3.6% of patients on P.D are found to be HBsAg+ve and 4.7% are HCV antibodies +ve.
