To the Editor ,

We agree with Vasco et al on the importance of HLA-C molecular typing and its role in bone marrow transplantation. Our article [1] raised the issue of molecular versus serology typing and how molecular typing revealed the true HLA-C allele distribution in the Saudi population. Currently, we have the technology to identify with good sensitivity and specificity donor-specific PRA antibodies. In solid organ transplantation, having the full typing of the donor allows the identification of donor versus non-donor-specific PRA. Vasco et al suggested that molecular typing of HLA-C plays an important role in unrelated stem cell donor matching. We have recently established the first Arabic registry for unrelated stem cell donors. We are typing donors for HLA-A, B, C, DRB1 and DQB1 using a sequence-based typing method. This will help in finding unrelated donors who are 10/10 match.
