To the Editor:
We read with interest the paper entitled "Acquired Cystic Renal Disease (ACRD) Patients Receiving Long-term Hemodialysis" by Kumar R, et al [1] in which they report their experience in Najran General Hospital, Saudi Arabia.
We would like to report our experience in ACRD in another area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, namely in Rafha and Arar Central Hospital, KSA. We studied 30 patients on hemodialysis for development of renal cysts on hemodialysis and included only those known not to have had cysts at the start of the dialysis. The mean age of the patients was 55 years.
ACRD was found to occur in 12 patients (37% - 7 males and 5 females). This compares to an incidence of 49% by Kumar et al. Like Kumar et al, we also found that the incidence increases with duration on dialysis being 64% in patients dialysed for more than 4 years and 78% in patients dialysed for more than 6 years. Similarly, none of our patients was symptomatic.
Like Kumar et al, we found that ACRD developed regardless of the etiology of ESRD including diabetic nephropathy without significant differences between various etiologies.
