Post-COVID Glomerular Filtration Rate in the Elderly Cases: A Preliminary Report on 50 Cases

Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is an important global problem at present. The disease is a respiratory tract infection, but it can also have nonrespiratory clinical presentation. The renal problem due to COVID-19 is possible and is an important consideration in clinical nephrology.[1] The renal function status after COVID-19 is an interesting issue. In a recent report in the journal, no significant change of renal function was observed in COVID-19 patients with primary kidney disease.[2] Here, the authors summarize the change of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in the elderly cases after COVID-19. The data are from overall 50 elderly patients (35 males, 15 females; aged 60−80 years old) who were healthy elderly at the geriatric health-care clinic. This case is a reappraisal on routing recorded clinical data of health-care clinic and did not have any extraordinary investigation/ test for the patient, and it is no requirement for informed consent adding to routine informed consent for getting routine healthcare. The protocol of this retrospective study is approved by the local ethical committee (MAC 2021-14, approved April 8, 2021).

According to the retrospective appraisal, the background pre-COVID-19 data of GFR among these cases were averagely 73.5 ± 8.7 mL/min/ 1.73 m2. All cases had moderate COVID illness according to the NIH guidelines (https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih. gov/overview/clinical-spectrum/).

After recovery from the hospital, at follow-up visit at one month, the average GFR level of these patients was 67.8 ± 12.6 mL/min/1.73 m2. There was a slight decrease in average GFR level. Based on these data, it can said that the GFR decreased after COVID-19 infection. It is necessary to have good monitoring of renal function in post-COVID-19 case. The vulnerable case such as the elderly patient with underlying renal failure problems should receive an intensive monitoring.
