The dialysis statistics prepared by the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) at the end of year 2012 showed a total of 14,171 dialysis patients, 12,844 of them are treated by hemodialysis (HD) and the remaining 1,327 by peritoneal dialysis (PD). The prevalence of endstage renal failure treated by dialysis is estimated to be 499 cases/PMP. Total death was 1638 (11.6%), while the incidence of treated ESRD is estimated at 129 cases/PMP.

 Hemodialysis

There are 182 dialysis centers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia having 4,992 machines catering to 12,844 patients. The Ministry of Health offers the largest percentage of these facilities with contributions made by the NON-MOH government sector as well as the private sector. The age distribution of dialysis population showed that the majority of patients are in the age groups (26-55) years. About 6.8% of the dialysis patients are older than 75 years while only 1.8% of them are less than 15 years old.

Hepatitis B seems to be in good control (3.8%) while hepatitis C continues to be a major problem (18.7% positivity) among dialysis patients. Of the 12,844 patients on dialysis, about 24% are in the active waiting list for transplantation with another 20% being evaluated for possible inclusion in the waiting list. It is worth mentioning that 61% of the HD patients are hypertensive, while 44% are diabetes.

 Peritoneal Dialysis

The total number of patients treated by PD had increased from 1,240 patients in 2011 to be 1,327 by the end of the year 2012 (87% of patients are adults and 13% are children). At the same time, 479 new patients have been registered this year on PD. Total death among PD patients was reported to be 9% (120 patients). 27% of PD patients are treated by the continuous ambulant peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), 70% by automated/continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (APD/CCPD), and only 3% are treated by intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD). 3% of patients on PD are found to be HBsAg+ve and 4% are HCV antibodies+ve.
